Are teachers paid too much?

Brookings cited a JEP paper in an article about recruiting effective teachers.

Brookings cited a paper from the Journal of Economic Perspectives in an article that questions the value of paying high salaries to teachers in order to attract the best talent. The 2010 JEP paper by authors Douglas Staiger and Jonah Rockoff offers a wide-ranging overview of the evidence, both from their own research and other studies, about teacher performance and the implications for school leaders who want to recruit and retain them. Among other things, the authors argue for a hiring process that is not highly selective and also for limiting tenure protections to only those teachers who meet a very high bar.
