Mismeasuring inflation and GDP

Bloomberg featured a paper that appears in the most recent issue of the Journal of Economic Perspectives in a piece about how U.S. government agencies are questioning the accuracy of their estimates of GDP and price growth. The paper by top officials in the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of Economic Analysis says that their statistical methods have led them to overstate inflation and understate real economic growth. The paper by Erica Groshen, Brian Moyer, Ana Aizcorbe, Ralph Bradley, and David Friedman, was presented last week at a meeting of the BEA’s advisory committee.
